2011.06.28 - Nigeria course in epidemiology and evidence-based planning

 Abuja, Nigeria, 28 June 2011

CIET is running the second module of a training course in epidemiology and evidence-based planning in Nigeria. The 21 participants in this two week course in Abuja come from state ministries of health and local government departments in Cross River and Bauchi states. The course, from 20 June to 2 July, is part of CIET's involvement in the NEHSI programme in Nigeria, a collaborative project between the government of Nigeria, Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). CIET is working to build capacities of Nigerians to plan and conduct studies and analyse new and existing data, and thus strengthen the health system.

Divided into four two-week modules, the CIET course in Nigeria provides the participants with a thorough grounding in basic epidemiology and statistics, with a strong focus on applying these tools to support evidence-based health planning. The eight women and 12 men benefiting from the training are also gaining practical experience in designing and implementing social audits of priority health issues in their two states, in collaboration with the state and local health authorities. In later modules of the course, they will have the opportunity to analyse the data from these social audits and will learn how to socialise the evidence for participatory action (SEPA).
