Mexico: Domestic violence against pregnant women in Ometepec, Guerrero, 2001
Mexico: Domestic violence against pregnant women in Ometepec, Guerrero, 2001

In 2001, all the women of childbearing age in this town of 11,500 inhabitants were interviewed, in the absence of their husbands or partners, by CIET-trained female nurses as part of a graduate training course. Out of 709 women who reported at least one pregnancy in the previous three years, 21% reported a history of physical abuse and 5.6% reported physical abuse during the last pregnancy. There was a strong association between the report of physical abuse during pregnancy and the report of vaginal bleeding, suggesting a link to miscarriage. There was also an association between having been physically abused during pregnancy and violent attitudes towards children based on a hypothetical scenario of disobedience. This study was reported in Mexico's major public health journal.
