Social indicator monitoring
CIET methods are used for monitoring the progress of large multi-faceted national and international social programmes as well as the prevalence of a single disease. National progress toward achievement of the goals of the 1990 World Summit for Children and the Millennium Development Goals has been measured in Afghanistan, Bolivia, Nepal and Ethiopia. Development of indicators for specific diseases has taken place in Mexico.

CIET methods, by synthesising both qualitative and quantitative data from a variety of sources, typically produces richer evidence than most other types of monitoring study. The logistical efficiency of the approach leads to equal or larger sample sizes for a much lower cost than standard methods.
