United States, El Puente: Student Survey on Environment and Health, 1995
In December 1995 CIET supported a survey by the El Puente Academy student body among their own families, friends and neighbors on environment and health. The survey showed a community aware of environmental problems but not too clear about what can and should be done about them. The majority of problems identified were vehicle-related, followed by those related to factories, while the responses tended to be in the area of recycling. The survey also found a clear association between passive smoking and respiratory problems in the household. There were twice as many respiratory problems reported in households where someone smokes more than 10 cigarettes per week indoors. Asthma among female children was three times as likely to be reported in such households as in smoke-free households.
