CIET began working in Cross River state, Nigeria during our demonstration social audit in 2006. Cross River is one of two states improving their health information and planning systems as part of our social audits. We carried out social audits in Cross River on maternal health in 2009 and child health in 2011.

Cross River is located in southeastern Nigeria. The 2006 census recorded a population of 2,892,988. The state is divided into 18 local government authorities (LGAs). Our SEPA communication strategy for the two social audits is going on in three focus LGAs in Cross River.

Youth groups in three communities in Cross River state produced short video dramas based on findings from our social audits to generate greater understanding of the problems faced by pregnant women and their small children. Cross River state was also the location of the third module for our course in epidemiology and evidence-based planning.
